IDF Casualty Counts

As a Demonstration of the significant cost of the 2023-2024 Israeli-Gaza War, a running count of casualties will be maintained. Here we examine the IDF losses. These numbers and names are readily available, but we will segment the casualties based on the portion of the conflict in which they occurred. IDF casualties in Operation Swords of Iron are extreme when compared to previous iterations of warfare against Hamas in Gaza or Hezbollah in Lebanon. This is because of the ferocity and surprise of the Oct 7 attacks and the full-scale invasion of Gaza in response.

These current casualties far outnumber the totals of previous named IDF operations and conflicts since Hamas assumed governance of Gaza in 2005-2006. A total of 121 IDF soldiers were killed in the 2006 Lebanon War against Hezbollah, 5 during Operation Summer Rains against Hamas, 1 during Operation Autumn Clouds, both in 2006, 2 during Operation Hot Winter in 2008, 10 during Operation Cast Lead in 2008-09, 2 during the March 2010 exchanges, 2 during Operation Pillar of Defense in 2012, 67 during Operation Protective Edge in 2014, 1 in the Khan Younis raid of November 2018, 1 during Operation Guardian of the Walls in 2021, for a total of 210 over the course of 16 years.

IDF active Brigades at the commencement of the war included the Golani Brigade, Givati Brigade, Nahal Brigade, Kfir Brigade, Paratroopers Brigade, Oz (Commando) Brigade, plus the 7th, 188th, and 401st Armored Brigades.

IDF Reserve Brigades, activated after Oct 7 include the Carmeli Brigade, Alexandroni Brigade, Etzioni Brigade, Yiftach Brigade, Oded Brigade, Negev Brigade, Jerusalem Brigade, several Reserve Paratroopers Brigades, plus the Kiryati, Machatz, and Harel Armored Brigades among others. An Infantry Training Brigade, the Bislamach has also been involved in the fighting.

In another post we will discuss HAMAS leadership losses and Palestinian casualties.
